Bei den Harzer Schmalspurbahnen sind noch heute - genau wie vor über 100 Jahren - Mallet-Lokomotiven beheimatet, die ihre Leistung immer noch im Zugdienst beweisen. Hier sind die derzeit einzigen betriebsfähigen Mallets in Deutschland zu finden. Sie dürften außerdem das wohl höchste Dienstalter aller deutschen Dampflokomotiven besitzen, denn sie sind zum Teil seit 1897, mit Ausnahme kürzerer Pausen, ununterbrochen im Einsatz. Die Strecken im Harz weisen lange Steigungen mit bis zu 25 ‰ auf, die höchste Anforderungen sowohl an das Material als auch das Personal stellen.
Seit Inbetriebnahme der Nordhausen-Wernigeroder Eisenbahn (NWE, "Harzquer- und Brockenbahn") spielten Mallet-Loks auf der Strecke eine dominierende Rolle. Noch im Jahr 1897, als die ersten Teilabschnitte in Betrieb gingen, wurden die ersten Mallets geliefert. Insgesamt bauten die Lokomotivfabrik Arnold Jung, Jungenthal und die Mecklenburgische Waggonfabrik Güstrow bis 1901 zwölf baugleiche B'Bn4vt-Mallets für die NWE, die in den ersten zehn Jahren fast den gesamten Verkehr abwickelten. Leider beschlagnahmten die Militärischen Feldeisenbahnen mit Beginn des ersten Weltkrieges sechs Maschinen, die allesamt im Krieg verloren gingen. Infolgedessen nummerierte die Bahngesellschaft im Jahr 1918 die verbliebenen sechs Lokomotiven um. Sie trugen nun die Nummern 11 bis 16. Eine Lok (NWE 12, ex 20) verunglückte am 06.07.1927 schwer im Thumkuhlental bei Wernigerode und stürzte einen hohen Damm hinunter. Sie wurde an Ort und Stelle zerlegt. Somit verblieben nur noch fünf Loks. Diese Maschinen, die 1949 die DR-Nummern 99 5901 bis 5905 erhielten, kamen ab 1956 zur Selketalbahn, da dort Triebfahrzeugmangel herrschte und in Wernigerode die ersten Neubauloks der Reihe 99.72 eintrafen.

Prototype:
At the HSB (Harz Narrow-gauge railways in Germany) there are today - just like 100 years ago - Mallet locomotives in service that prove that prove their performance and capability on a daily basis. These are the only currently operational Mallets in Germany. They also represent the longest service life of all German steam locomotives since they have been in continuous operation since 1897, except for a few short breaks. The routes in the Harz mountains include long stretches with inclines of up to 25 ‰, demanding the highest levels of performance By both man and machine.
Since the commissioning of the Nordhausen-Wernigerode Railway (NWE, "Harzquer- and Brockenbahn") Mallet locomotives played a dominant role on that route. When the first sections of that route were placed into service in 1897, the first mallets were also delivered. Until 1901, the locomotive manufacturer Arnold Jung, Jungenthal and the Mecklenburg Waggonfabrik GĂĽstrow built twelve identical B'Bn4vt-Mallets which handled almost all traffic for the NWE during the first ten years of operation. Unfortunately, the military field railways confiscated six locomotives at the beginning of the First World War which were all lost. As a result, the railroad re-numbered the remaining six locomotives in 1918. They now carried the numbers 11 to 16. One locomotive (NWE 12, ex 20) was severely damaged on July 6th 1927 in the Thumkuhlen-valley near Wernigerode when it fell down a high embankment. She was dismantled right on the spot. Thus only five locomotives remained. In 1949, these received Deutsche Reichsbahn (German State Railway) running numbers 99 5901 to 99 5905. They were transferred to the Selketal railway in 1956 since there was a shortage of powered units and because the first new class 99.72 locomotives were being delivered to Wernigerode.
