Vorbild
Ende des 19ten Jahrhunderts hatten die älteren und kleineren Loks der Denver & Rio Grande Bahngesellschaft Probleme die Güter- und Personenzüge über die steilen und kurvenreichen Strecken zu schleppen. Die Denver & Rio Grande suchte eine neue Lok die mindestens das Doppelte an Gewicht befördern konnte als die existierenden Lokomotiven und entschied sich für eine Baldwin W4213, später als die K-27 bekannt. Von dieser neuen amerikanischen Schmalspurlok wurden 15 Stück bestellt und mit den Laufnummern 450 bis 464 bezeichnet. Diese Loks waren für viele Jahre in Betrieb; während dieser Zeit wurden viele Verbesserungen an den Loks durchgeführt.
Modell
Bachmann produziert eine Reihe von K-27 Lokomotiven, Teil der Spectrum Serie, mit unterschiedlichen Details, Lackierungen, Führerhaus und Tender Aufbau speziell abgeändert für eine bestimmte Lok Laufnummer und einem bestimmten Zeitperiode.
Dies ist die Denver & Rio Grande Western Nummer 455 mit folgender Ausstattung:
• Schnittstelle für DC (Gleichstrom), NMRA DCC und Fernbedienung / Batterie
• Speziell nach Bachmann Spezifikation angefertigter 24-Volt Pittman Motor mit Messing Schwungrad
• Hochbelastbare Stecker und Leitungen
• Prototypischer Dämpfungsausgleich mit einzeln gefederten Antrieben und nachfolgenden Drehgestellen sowie "schwebendes" Getriebe
• Optische Sensoren in Zylindern zur Sound-Synchronisation
• Konstante Beleuchtung der LED-Scheinwerfer, Klassifikationslichtern und Rücklicht
• Lastabhängiges Flackernder Feuerbüchse
• Dreiwegschalter mit Mittelstellung "Aus" für DCC- oder DC-Betrieb von Rauchentwickler, Führerhauslicht und Feuerbüchse/Positionslichter
• Antrieb auf allen Achsen mit Stromaufnahme im Tender
• Leichter Zugang zum Tender

Prototype
As the 19th Century came to a close the older, smaller engines of the Denver & Rio Grande's narrow gauge railroad struggled to haul freight and passenger traffic over the line's steep grades and tight curves. After soliciting design specifications from several builders for a locomotive able to handle at least twice the tonnage of the engines previously in use, the railroad selected Baldwin Design Specification W4213, later known as the K-27. Unlike anything previously built for American Narrow Gauge, a total of 15 K-27's were ordered and assigned road numbers 450 to 464, with numerous modifications made throughout the course of their many years of operation.
Model
Bachmann produced a range of K-27 locomotives, part of their Spectrum line, with different details, paint schemes, cab and tender shell specific to an individual road number at a certain time in its service career.
This is the Denver & Rio Grande Westen Number 455 with the following features:
• interface to accommodate DC, NMRA DCC, and remote control/battery operation
• custom-built 24 volt Pittman motor with double shafted brass machined flywheel
• heavy-duty plugs and wiring

Locomotive is quite wide with a large overlang on curves.
Requires 105 mm (4 1/8 inches) clearance measured from the centreline of the track when negotiating 10 foot diameter curves.
