The Mallet locomotive design is one of the most common articulated types.
This is also one of those types where performance and economy was second to none for many years.
This design was invented by the Swiss engineer Anatole Mallet, in the eighties of the 19th century.
In the US, Mallet locomotives were first placed into service in 1904.
A few years later, "Mallets" were also introduced in South America.
This particular locomotive was in service at a private line in Brazil.
