Anfang der 30er Jahre entwickelte Union Pacific die beste Hochgeschwindigkeitsdampflok in Amerika und beauftragte die ALCO Lokomotivenwerke diese zu bauen. Die 4-6-6-4 Challenger Lokomotive sah man zum ersten Mal auf Union Pacific Gleisen im Jahre 1936. Schon von Anfang an war es klar daß diese Lok schwere Züge mit hohen Geschwindigkeiten befördern konnte. Obwohl die Challenger Lok für den schnellen Güterverkehr entwickelt wurde, benutzte sie Union Pacific auch für Personenverkehr, die Lok bewies daß sie allen Anforderungen gewachsen war.

In the early 30's, Union Pacific designed the best high-speed simple articulated locomotive for American rails and had the ALCO locomotive works build these units. The 4-6-6-4 Challenger first appeared on Union Pacific rails in 1936. It was clear from the beginning that it could handle heavy trains at high speeds. Although the Challenger was designed for fast freight traffic, she was also used for passenger service by the Union Pacific; this engine proved capable for any task required of it.
